Staying by the ocean has a way of changing your pace. At Pacific Playgrounds Oceanside Resort, the shoreline is part of everyday life: morning walks, quiet views across the water, marina activity, family adventures, and the simple pleasure of settling into a coastal rhythm.
This June, that connection to the coast became even more meaningful when Pacific Playgrounds was pleased to host Comox Valley Project Watershed Society for an eelgrass restoration event supporting new marine habitat near Miracle Beach.
Over the course of the event, more than 50 volunteers helped prepare 7,200 eelgrass shoots for planting. Those shoots were used to create approximately 720 m² of new eelgrass habitat near Miracle Beach, contributing to ongoing restoration work in the local marine environment.
For Pacific Playgrounds, it was a privilege to support the team by providing access to Resort and marina facilities as they carried out this important work.
What Is Eelgrass, and Why Does It Matter?
Eelgrass may not always be the first thing people notice when they look out across the water, but it plays an important role in healthy coastal ecosystems.
These underwater meadows provide habitat, shelter, and nursery areas for many forms of marine life. They help support fish, invertebrates, and the broader food web that makes coastal waters so rich and alive. Eelgrass beds can also help stabilize sediment, improve water clarity, and contribute to the long-term health of nearshore environments.
In other words, eelgrass is one of those quiet natural systems doing a great deal of work beneath the surface.
Restoring eelgrass habitat is hands-on, careful work. Volunteers help prepare eelgrass shoots for transplanting, while restoration teams and divers manage the process of placing those shoots where they can establish and grow. It is practical, detailed, community-powered work, and it reflects the kind of local stewardship that helps protect the coast for future generations.
A Community Effort Near Miracle Beach
Project Watershed’s June restoration event brought together staff, divers, boat support, and volunteers to help expand eelgrass habitat near Miracle Beach.
Pacific Playgrounds served as a staging and support location for the event, with the Resort’s marina helping provide the kind of practical access needed for work along the water. Volunteers gathered on shore to help prepare eelgrass shoots, while the restoration team coordinated the next steps for planting.
The result was a meaningful contribution to local habitat restoration: thousands of eelgrass shoots prepared and hundreds of square metres of new habitat created.
We are grateful to Project Watershed and the many volunteers who gave their time, energy, and care to this project. Their work is a reminder that the places we love are sustained by people who show up for them.
Staying Connected to the Coast
For guests at Pacific Playgrounds, Vancouver Island’s natural beauty is often one of the biggest reasons to visit. Families come to explore the beach, couples come for quiet coastal time, long-stay guests settle into relaxed Island routines, and adventurers use the Resort as a base for discovering nearby trails, water, wildlife, and local communities.
Projects like this offer a deeper look at the living systems that make the coast so special.
A beach walk becomes more than a beautiful view. A marina becomes more than a place for boats. The shoreline becomes part of a larger story — one shaped by tides, habitat, marine life, local knowledge, and community care.
That is part of what makes a stay at Pacific Playgrounds so rewarding. Guests can do everything or do nothing: launch into Island adventures, enjoy simple family time, watch the light change over the water, or learn a little more about the coastal environment around them.
However you choose to spend your time here, the coast is always close.
Visiting With Care
Enjoying Vancouver Island’s shoreline also means treating it with care. Small choices can help protect the places guests come to experience:
Stay on marked paths where possible, give wildlife space, avoid disturbing intertidal areas, pack out what you bring in, and follow local guidance when exploring beaches, trails, and sensitive coastal habitats.
These are simple habits, but they help keep the coast healthy, welcoming, and beautiful for everyone.
