Autumn on Vancouver Island is a season of contrasts. Golden forests glowing in the afternoon sun, coastal light softening into pink horizons, and migrating birds cutting across the sky. At Pacific Playgrounds Oceanside Resort, fall invites you to slow down, camera in hand, and capture the kind of moments that stay with you long after your getaway ends.
Golden-Hour Beach Walks
Just minutes from the Resort, Saratoga Beach is one of the Island’s most photographed spots. When the tide is low and the sun begins its slow descent, the wet sand mirrors the sky, creating a breathtaking palette of golds, pinks, and blues. Bring your camera (or even just your phone) and experiment with wide shots that capture both the shoreline and the ever-changing sky.
Forests in Full Colour
Cathedral Grove and Little Qualicum Falls are short drives away and showcase fall’s brilliance in different ways. Cathedral Grove’s towering Douglas firs frame shafts of morning light, while the trails around Little Qualicum Falls reveal cascades wrapped in autumn leaves. Both locations are ideal for experimenting with framing…try using overhanging branches or natural rock formations to guide the eye toward the center of your shot.
Wildlife on the Wing
Fall is also migration season. Eagles, waterfowl, and shorebirds pass along the coast, providing opportunities for action shots or close-up detail with a zoom lens. Early mornings and late afternoons are best, when the softer light enhances the natural drama. Even if you’re not a seasoned photographer, these are unforgettable moments to witness.
Tips for Capturing the Moment
- Framing: Use natural elements like driftwood or tree trunks to give depth to your shots.
- Light: Plan for early morning or late afternoon (the “golden hours”) for the most flattering light.
- Perspective: Don’t be afraid to change your angle. Shoot low to the sand for reflections, or tilt upward for towering trees.
